When is the tax filing deadline for individuals outside of the U.S.

Modified on Mon, 13 Jan at 3:33 PM

U.S. citizens and resident aliens who live and work outside the U.S. and Puerto Rico have until April 15, 2025 to file their 2024 tax returns and pay any tax due.

If you are a U.S. citizen or resident alien living outside of the United States, the general tax filing deadline is June 15th 2025. However, if you owe any taxes, you are required to pay them by April 15, 2025, to avoid interest and penalties.

It's important to note that if you have foreign financial accounts or assets, you may be required to file additional forms, such as the FBAR (Foreign Bank Account Report) or FATCA (Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act) Form 8938. These forms have different filing deadlines and requirements, so it's important to consult with a tax professional or refer to the IRS website for more information.

You can find additional information about the special tax rules for U.S. taxpayers abroad at Publication 54, Tax Guide for U.S. Citizens and Resident Aliens Abroad.
