To fix a rejected federal extension, log into your account, open the Temporarily Rejected filing under Tax Filings, click Correct and Resubmit, fix the flagged fields, and resubmit — at no additional charge.
Why this works. A "temporarily rejected" extension isn't a denial — it means the IRS e-file system flagged a data mismatch, most often a Social Security Number, name, or address that doesn't match IRS records. Correcting the flagged field and resubmitting lets your original filing date still count.
How to correct and resubmit your extension
- Log into your account with the email and password you used to create it.
- Go to Tax Filings and find the extension (Personal or Business) marked Temporarily Rejected.
- Click Correct and Resubmit at no additional cost.
- Review the notes in red — they outline exactly which fields need fixing.
- Make the corrections and click Next.
- Keep clicking Next until you see confirmation that your extension has been sent to the IRS.
- Watch for an acceptance email within a few minutes (check spam/junk), or check Extension Notification in your account.
Rejected again? Read the new rejection reason carefully — it's often a different field than the first time — and repeat the steps above.
Don't wait if the deadline is close. The IRS gives filers a short window to correct and resubmit a rejected extension and still have it count as timely filed, but that window does not extend the deadline to pay any tax owed. If you're near the deadline, resubmit as soon as possible.
Common causes include a Social Security Number or name that doesn't match Social Security Administration records, and address-formatting issues (for example, military APO/FPO addresses).
If your situation is more complex — a missing ITIN, a recent name change, or a rejection reason you don't recognize — consult a licensed tax professional, or chat with Support before resubmitting.
