Where do I mail my Form 1040 tax return?

Modified on Tue, 4 Aug at 5:13 PM

First — are you mailing a tax return or a tax extension?

If you filed a tax extension with us (Form 4868), you don't need to mail anything yourself — we handle that electronically. If you chose the free print-and-mail extension option, see How to Find and Download Your Tax Extension Forms for that address instead. This article is for mailing a completed 1040 tax return.

Find your mailing address

The correct address depends on two things: your state, and whether you're including a payment. Find your state group below. The IRS official list is at: Where to File Paper Tax Returns.

A few things to know before you mail it

  • Include any required schedules (Schedule 1, 2, or 3) — a missing schedule can delay processing.
  • Paying by check? Make it payable to "United States Treasury." You can also pay electronically iat IRS Direct Pay, even if you're mailing the return itself.
  • Mail it with tracking (certified mail or a tracked carrier) so you have proof of the postmark date — a return is on time if it's postmarked by the deadline.
  • Mailed returns take longer to process than e-filed ones — the IRS recommends e-filing when possible.
