What is AGI and do I need it to file an extension?

Modified on Mon, 8 Jun at 11:32 AM

AGI (Adjusted Gross Income) is your total annual income minus specific deductions such as student loan interest, alimony, and IRA contributions. It appears on line 11 of your Form 1040.

For filing an extension, you typically do not need your AGI unless you are authorizing an electronic payment (Electronic Funds Withdrawal) as part of your filing, which may require your prior-year AGI as an identity verification step.

To find your prior-year AGI: check line 11 of your most recent Form 1040, or request a tax transcript at irs.gov.
